Building on our past activities at National Trust Scotland Threave Nature Reserve at Castle Douglas, we held another Joint Branch and DSWA Members event in July. Dry Stone Walling Association Members from across the South Scotland and North England constructed a new circular viewpoint on top of Port Hill over-looking the River Dee. The viewpoint has wonderful views of the rewetted nature reserve including an osprey nest with the parent birds flying to and fro. Seating will be added to the feature at a later date. As well as the viewpoint some participants rebuilt three cheek ends to field dykes on the reserve.
The work was developed with the support of the National Trust Scotland and their volunteers helped prepare the site under the watchful eye of Head Ranger Dave Thompson. Special thanks to Linda for keeping us well fed, and to Garth for his guidance during the construction of the feature.
The Members Weekend was a great success and enjoyed by all the participants. We look forward to planning similar events in the future with National Trust Scotland at Threave.
