DSWA CRAFTSMAN CERTIFICATION SCHEME

Overseas candidates for Craftsman Scheme Examinations please refer to page 15
of the Craftsman Certification Scheme booklet (printable version).

Applications for examination together with the appropriate registration fee of 25 British Pounds must be lodged at DSWA(GB) headquarters not later than 6 weeks prior to the test date. Payments can be made by credit card (Visa or Mastercard only) or by cheque drawn on a bank in Great Britain.

Examination Fees should be arranged with, and paid to, your local Examiner.
GB  examination fees listed in the Craftsman Certification Scheme booklet do not apply.

  Spring 2007 Workshop Schedule

General Public Rock Fence Workshop.  Designed for lay people (including fence owners) who would like to gain a basic understanding of drystone construction. The pace will be comfortable and participants will learn the skills needed to repair historic fences and build simple garden walls.

General Public Retaining Wall Workshop.  Participants will learn the skills needed to build or repair simple drystone retaining walls. The pace will be comfortable.

Mason Rock Fence Workshop.  Designed for individuals who intend to become certified dry stone masons or to offer professional drystone walling and masonry construction services. The pace is a bit more rigorous than that of the general public workshops.

Mason Retaining Wall Workshop.  Similar in pace to the mason rock fence workshop. Participants will learn to build or repair drystone retaining walls.

Design Professionals Workshop.  This course will benefit landscape designers, architects, restoration consultants, other design professionals, and individuals in supervisory capacities. Participants will gain a basic understanding of drystone fence and retaining wall construction for project design and/or construction inspection purposes.

Workshop logistics

Dates and locations for our currently scheduled workshops are shown on the accompanying registration form.  Workshops run from 8:30 AM to 4 PM both days, beginning with a classroom introduction to the theories and techniques of dry stone masonry, followed by practical hands-on instruction restoring or building a dry stone wall. Participants bring their own food and beverages (unless otherwise noted), work gloves and a 3-4 lb. rock or brick hammer (we will have some extras hammers for those who do not already have them).  We can offer only limited assistance with travel and lodging arrangements.

Registration

The Conservancy’s two-day workshop fee is $250.00 (unless otherwise noted) and includes a copy of our training manual Building and Repairing Dry Stone Fences & Retaining Walls.

To register, please fill out and return the enclosed registration form along with a $50.00 deposit for each workshop you wish to attend.  We will send a confirmation letter within a few days receipt as well as follow-up letter two weeks prior to the workshop with directions to the site and more detailed instructions.

Please be aware that the number of participants in each workshop is limited and that workshops are often fully-booked well in advance.  We strongly recommend that you reply quickly in order to guarantee your spot.

The mission of the Dry Stone Conservancy is to revive and promote the ancient craft of dry stone masonry

and to preserve existing dry stone structures.  The DSC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
